Journal #2 Haole-- Hear of it?

I was talking with my dad about racism and why doesn't it effect the white man unless it's called reverse racism... And he got upset. After shouting for several minutes about nothing in particular, my dad pulled out one of our home videos when we were in Hawaii.

It started off pretty funny, it was one of our christmas videos. There was this awesome huge inflatable Saturn planet that kids our size could get on, two on each side to balance. I fell off and my sister flung into a cd case!!! Ah, good times of prankery...

But that's beside the point. Later in the day we went to go to the Beach, North Shore. We usually don't fall victim to this because most people know we're locals, but this was a disturbing exception. Parts of the beach seem a little segregated... For a reason. We accidently went into a part of North Shore that a Samoan group seemed to claim for themselves. The film was a bit fuzzy but I can definately translate things like "Get your f***ing Haole kids out of here!" or "Haole sons of b****es", list goes on. Normally dad would have ignored them, but most of the samoans were pretty big... like can eat us alive big.

Haole was a term for someone who isn't native to the island, or tourists, but overtime as only white people seemed to turn out to be this way, it turned into a derogatory term for white people. I didn't remember any of this, I think it was because my sister and I didn't have a lot of people call us that due our dark eyes and hair, and skin due to the sun. My little brother remembers this all too well, however. He didn't go outside much causing fair skin, had hazel eyes like my mother, and his hair is a lighter shade of brown. This conversation brought out a lot of things I didn't know about him, like how subject he was to racism.

So I don't really like how hatred against the white man is considered reverse racism-- as if it was karma. That's racism too, just ask him.
