Free response

I know people who say that the recession we are in was emphasized way more than it should have been, for reasons similar to what happened with Germany in the 1930's. I wonder if that's outlandish or if it really is something worth looking into.

I can kind of see where those people are going with it. Germany saw Hitler as a man that would help them. That's a bit how I see other people looking at Obama. They see him as someone who would provide radical change, and that he will get us out of this mess.

Whenever people talk about the economy, all that's in the discussion is economics. I never hear the political and social aspect of it all. What if we are giving Obama too much power with all of this? There are plenty of people that are against him. Problem is, some of those people hate him due to racism, and why would anyone with open thought want to associate with that? Was that Obama's plan, if there was one?

I probably sound crazy when I say all this, but it really is on my mind. I see other patterns, and if you look at it openly it really does seem to come together.

I would hate giving up...

If our economic trouble right now turns into anything like the great depression, and I would need to force myself to give up everything I don't need, I would miss my ipod. I would give it up and try to sell it to make extra money, but the music kind of soothes me when I get upset. Considering we're in a period in time where everything's going to upset people, it would be a hard thing to not have.

I could just keep my cd player and keep all my cd's though. I don't know if anybody would use that now anyway, so if I tried selling it I probably wouldn't make much money.

Teddy Roosevelt

I've decided to go through with my decision to preserve the forests. I think it'll help us economically and politically as well.

The American Industry will alwaus need wood, water, and other minerals. Americans know that. I think one thing that's hard to understand is that these resources are not unlimited. I think these conservation can work as an abundant last resort if we were ever desperate for the necessitie. The Buffalo became extremely endangered. I think this will be a wake up call to Americans that nothing is forever, and we need to try to save what we have.

But this isn't only an act of conserving resources. This will help with our democracy. It will express the democratic way of selflessness, that we work to preserve things greater than ourselves. At the end of the depression we shouldn't discard these conservation projects. This could help us economically for future generations as well.

This could help with the way other nations percieve us. We are a young country, yet we are making more and more technological and industrial advances everyday. Maybe respect will come for us if they see that our concerns are with nature as well.

I hope this works out.

Journal #3 for Boom and Bust

I become a little scared at the idea of the company owner looking out for my interest. That's not what will help his salary. He will reduce my pay because it would help him economically. This would not sound like a good situation because there's no room for objection unless I am to quit. The labor agitators benefit from helping me financially, while to the company owner I'm just another small worker.

This sounds a lot like a monopoly situation on the workers side. I only have one source to worry about my money. I simply have to trust the man that would benefit from not paying me to pay me the proper ammount of money to live.

I would very quickly start trying to look for another job, even if it is in another factory. I would look but not touch until my wages start to decrease. If nothing else is available, I would hope that he doesn't decrease my pay, even though I know that's what will eventually happen.

I wouldn't strike. I know that people who strike often end up being much worse than they already are. Instead I would raise awareness and tell as many people about it as people, so that people on the outside can help.

Mexican Sweatshop Worker.

I wake up, hesitant to make too much noise for the others around me. Twelve in a room isn't very comfy, but I manage.
I wake up earlier than most of my workers because I walk to my job; I don't have a car or a bike. All the money I make goes to feeding me and my family and getting by with paying my share of the rent. After walking about ten miles I get to the factory I work in at six o' clock, a.m. I help make T-shirts.
I immediately get sent to my part of the assembly line, folding clothes for shipping. I'm one of the lucky ones. Just yesterday some guy lost his hand while working the fabric machine. He simply held on to the cloth for too long. He got fired that day for "malpractice with the machine." Not even two weeks notice. I would be angry, but this is the only job i can get at the moment, and I need to work to survive, so speaking up to the boss is not an option.
I worked through lunch again today. I figure with more production that happens because of me, maybe I'll earn extra money for something.
I got off work at eight o' clock p.m. I really wish our hours were what counted in the pay instead of production. I would have a lot more money if that was the case.
I make dinner for my family coming home from their jobs. Then we socialize a little, and I shower a little and go to bed at ten.

19th Century invention

Without the invention of the battery, I'm not too sure how today's life would be able to work the way it does.
Without the battery, I wouldn't wake up to an alarm clock every morning. Without my alarm clock I'm always too tired to wake up. We wouldn't be able to tell time the way we do, for that matter. Cd players wouldn't be able to work away from an outlet. Pretty much anything that is electrical would not exist, or would but without efficiency.
Although, hindsight kind of makes me wish the battery wasn't invented. Without my alarm clock maybe my sleeping patterns would be more steady, causing less health problems. Maybe without the option of meesing around with technology for hours on end would increase work and production. Maybe the ideal of things being "easier" for us only caused prolonged hardship. I guess what I mean to say is the idea of living without the power of a battery is unimaginable, and maybe that isn't such a good thing that we have something so easy to take for granted.

Journal #6 Another sxephil (please excuse language it's reeeeaaaally bad on this one!!!!)

Ok so on this one he actually gets pretty deep into forced religion and racial profiling. The firrst one he discusses is the forced religion. Buses in the UK have been plastered with atheist posters saying "There probably is no God, so stop worrying and enjoy your life"... umm... What do you say to that?

Picture of poster here: http://stupc.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/abc.jpg

I do believe in a higher power. I think Allah and God may be the same thing but the religion is distorted through geography and culture. However... Something like this doesn't upset me. As a matter of fact it makes me a little happy for the honest atheist that feels taken down for what they believe. Once I claimed myself to be an atheist. It just seemed really simple to say that life is beautiful in itself and there is no need for anything afterward. I said that to my dad, and he gave me a really long lecture, almost as if he wanted me to change because he was ashamed of what I believed, or thought I believed at least.

Is there something taboo with no belief in an afterlife? Is it prejudice, or just an attempt of a feeling of hope for the future of loved ones? Is this a struggle for equality that's worth the struggle?Or is the acceptance of faiths kind of crossed in this situation? If it is, I really feel terrible for Atheist. They can't even enjoy the only life that they honestly believe in.

And the most prominent one in this video I think is the one where he talks about the Arabic man who had to cover up his shirt that had Arabic script, saying it was equivalent to having "I'm a robber" on his shirt while walking in a bank... wow... I can't even think of words for that one. That's sick. I hope the man who told this man this gets killed by a Muslim suicide bomber that looks completely American, and a man that he talked to and respected. That's so racist it's not funny.

Journal #5 SxePhil and racism

Sxephil is the screename of a man named Phillip Defranco that gives daily posts that are pretty much really politically incorrect and sarcastic and funny current events. So of course he deals with a lot of seemingly taboo issues... like race.

The link on the bottom is a youtube video he made talking about various things, such as an astroid almost hitting earth, an ex porn star senator, and Miley Cyrus. He talks about a picture where Miley posed with a ton of white people and one asian boy, squinting their eyes to make fun of him, while the asian is wide-eyed in apparent shock.

I don't really know what to think about this... The setting makes it seem like the asian is their friend. It's like a small party in someone's house. That, and why does the asian look shocked if he was looking in the camera? how could he have seen them making fun of him until after the picture was taken.

My bet is this was a posed joke that the asian boy participated in. If that's the case I don't see the harm in it. The boy couldn't have been offended if he agreed to it. Unless this was a situation where since it was a pleasant atmosphere he felt the pressure of people turning on him and being mean to him if he didn't. I guess only the boy will know if it was a bash on his race or not.

Oh and a side note. When Phil talks about the name Lequisha, and bashing it, saying he's never heard people with the name Lequisha pronounce anything properly, is that racist? It's an African name, but I don't know if that has any relevance to the joke. He could just be bashing the name. For example, Bob doesn't seem like a serious name to me.

Journal #4 "Gran Torino"

Clint Eastwood is awesome...
My older brother took me to the movies to see "Gran Torino", which fit very well in the topic of struggle for equality. This hit a lot in the feild of Asian people, but mostly gang affiliation with the Vietnamese. The leading lady is a young vietnamese girl who talks about her family moving to America because they wanted to be free of Communism, and faces a new fear that Americans impose because of prejudice.

The young girl gets rape threats left and right, and eventually gets gang raped by her own cousin's gang, because she is friends with the man next door- A war veteran who fought in Vietnam. Their people are depicted as either being spat at or adored by Americans.

The major arguement that the gang makes for themselves is that they are protecting their own people. They feel looked down upon by Americans, and even Asians of different countries, and feel a preamtive strike is the only way to protect themselves. The projection theory doesn't exactly help their cause in this instance.

I never really saw asian people being looked down upon, so I never saw these problems before. This movie really enlightened me. As I said before in my Haole Journal, I guess racism really does occur in ALL races.

Journal #3 Anti-Semitism in United States

Ever since the end of World War II I feel like the lessons of the genocide camps were drilled into us as small children. We all know the basics of what happened, how it happened, and it's debateable as to why it happened. The debateable part gives me reason to think this is a struggle for equality for the Jewish.

Most of us were taught at a young age that what happpened in the concentration camps were terrible. A small sum of us, however, through German propaganda and lessons from mommy and daddy, believe otherwise. It's scary how many people are in this small sum.

Even though Jewish people are safe in America according to the law, there are people still being emotionally, and sometimes even physically hurt by these people. Movies that are tranlated into English in this country that was used as propaganda, like The Eternal Jew, can still be found in bookstores, and no doubt haunt any knowledgeable Jewish person that sees it being purchased.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eternal_Jew

These Anti-Semitists cowards hide behind the freedom of speech and expression to dress themselves and their homes in swastikas, scaring any Jewish person that might live in their neighborhood. Some have had the audacity to spraypaint the symbol on their religious temples.

Journal #2 Haole-- Hear of it?

I was talking with my dad about racism and why doesn't it effect the white man unless it's called reverse racism... And he got upset. After shouting for several minutes about nothing in particular, my dad pulled out one of our home videos when we were in Hawaii.

It started off pretty funny, it was one of our christmas videos. There was this awesome huge inflatable Saturn planet that kids our size could get on, two on each side to balance. I fell off and my sister flung into a cd case!!! Ah, good times of prankery...

But that's beside the point. Later in the day we went to go to the Beach, North Shore. We usually don't fall victim to this because most people know we're locals, but this was a disturbing exception. Parts of the beach seem a little segregated... For a reason. We accidently went into a part of North Shore that a Samoan group seemed to claim for themselves. The film was a bit fuzzy but I can definately translate things like "Get your f***ing Haole kids out of here!" or "Haole sons of b****es", list goes on. Normally dad would have ignored them, but most of the samoans were pretty big... like can eat us alive big.

Haole was a term for someone who isn't native to the island, or tourists, but overtime as only white people seemed to turn out to be this way, it turned into a derogatory term for white people. I didn't remember any of this, I think it was because my sister and I didn't have a lot of people call us that due our dark eyes and hair, and skin due to the sun. My little brother remembers this all too well, however. He didn't go outside much causing fair skin, had hazel eyes like my mother, and his hair is a lighter shade of brown. This conversation brought out a lot of things I didn't know about him, like how subject he was to racism.

So I don't really like how hatred against the white man is considered reverse racism-- as if it was karma. That's racism too, just ask him.

I put up some youtube videos of people being subject to racism in this way, some were right where I remember it. Please excuse the language in some of these videos

Journal Entry #1 A deeper look at a canversation with a friend

A friend of mine from history was working with me on our history projects. He showed me a youtube video of Disney's Peter Pan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_at9dOElQk) of one of their songs, "What made the red man red?"

At first I was really shocked. It's been a while since I've seen Peter Pan, so I never recognized the racism behind this song. You can definately tell in some lyrics that this was meant for children and it was meant to be innocent. But then again, you can say the same thing about Nazi progaganda videos that were in cartoon form.

I was even more shocked, and a little offended, (Crow in me taking over) when I looked into what the word "squaw". This was a term for Native American women, however it was rarely used on such friendly terms. White men coming to America would call the Native American women this with the intention of calling them whores.

Even though this movie was made in the 1950's, and Walt Disney was known to have a little racism, and squaws' true meaning is just woman, I'm very surprised that I never heard anyone hating Peter Pan because of that song. Then again, the beat is fantastic!

Eric Holder as Senator- American Character and Belief System

Cecilia H.

Senate Confirms Holder as First Black AG

Comcast News Network

Eric Holder was made official Senator, and I think he is a part of the presidents cabinet, though Im not sure, it was mentioned once in the article but did seem really brushed off.

I couldnt see much bias in the article, The report said what republicans and democrats equally wanted from him, though they did make it obvious that republicans didnt like him nearly as much as democrats do.

This article, I think, is written in a political way. It gets detailed about Holders views on guns, on economy, on a lot of different things and what the senators think about it. I think the article can be described as practical.

As detailed as the article is, I definately think this article is mainstream interpretation. It does get into their views, but a lot of it is what so-and-so said. It doesnt really dwell much on how this senator can really can us in the future.

This article relates to our theme of American Character and Belief system because I think a lot of our American Beliefs include copying and pasteing good ideas. Obama has kind of the same ideals as this man and is now President, I think that a lot of our beliefs include knowing a good thin when we see it. I think hed make a good senator, with the exception of the gun laws.

Langston Hughes- Positive or Negative?

"Let America be America Again" by Langston Hughes seems to have very common thought to what all of us Americans are really thinking. She did list a lot of our suffering in the individual, and made it very clear as to why us Americans would have doubt in ourselves. I don't think this part relates too well with the American Character and belief system though. This part of the poem is very Average Joe, its what were all thinking and complaining about. We all say things like "I hate how unethical this country made us". But she doesnt mention that its not the piece of land were standing on that made us this way. Its the opportunities of the easy route that the rights of this country gave us. We all say we hate how unethical we are, and yet sueing and falsely accusing and censoring people seem to be a normal thing.
However, at the end of the poem, she says she wants America to be the America that it never was, the America were all fond of, and instead of doing what the average person does, she swears to help change it. Apathy and fear are the roots of ultimate evil, and in the end she expresses none. I think the earnest need to help people out of the wrongs they are facing is a universal thing, but very much part of the American Character and Belief System. I think this poem was the thing we were all thinking but not saying.
